Bad Painters Club

Product Design

Bad Painters Club is a self-initiated project that explores creative freedom through imperfection. It began as an experiment to break my own perfectionist habits and evolved into a physical card deck that helps other creatives do the same. Each card includes a prompt that encourages intuitive, process-based painting focused on discovery rather than outcome.

What is BAD PAINTERS CLUB?

Bad Painters Club is a creative tool designed to help artists and designers break free from perfectionism. It’s a deck of cards that blends design thinking with play, each containing a unique painting prompt that encourages experimentation, intuition, and creative risk-taking.

How did BAD PAINTERS CLUB start?

The project began as a personal experiment after discovering squeegee art online. When I tried it myself, I quickly became frustrated by the urge to make every piece look “good.” That reaction revealed how deeply perfectionism shaped my creative process. By embracing spontaneity and imperfection, I found a new way to create without overthinking.

Why did you name it BAD PAINTERS CLUB?

“Bad” is subjective. The name reclaims the word and reframes it as permission to explore, to fail, and to make without judgment. It’s about shifting focus from outcome to process and celebrating creativity as a form of curiosity, not control.

How long did it take you to make BAD PAINTERS CLUB?

In the spirit of the project, I designed and produced it in less than one day (not including painting creation). The process itself was fast and intuitive, reinforcing the idea that meaningful design can emerge from instinct and imperfection.

Creative Process

I used a Canson pad, acrylic paint, and a squeegee to create hundreds of experimental paintings. Each piece was completed quickly to emphasize process over outcome. The repetition revealed new color combinations, textures, and compositions that emerged naturally through movement.

Afterward, I scanned more than 500 sheets and curated a selection to form the final card deck. Each card features an original painting on one side and a creative prompt on the other, designed to spark curiosity and loosen creative control.
